Boris is not trying to save democracy

Robert Colvile takes a very narrow, simplistic definition of our democracy in this argument for Boris Johnson’s approach to government.

Our liberal democracy will be warped into an illiberal one with such arguments.

The 2016 referendum gave a mandate to leave, but not for how to do so. But in any liberal democracy worth the name, the how needs to be democratically scrutinised too. Without that democratic scrutiny we are on the road to despotism.

The Conservatives have repeatedly tried to avoid that scrutiny, with attacks on the institutions and individuals that deliver it.

If that is not an attempt to wreck our democracy, I don’t know what is.
